Rees cool on Las Vegas title talk

Date published : 08 Jan 2010 - 18:56:35

Ex-world champion Gavin Rees' camp have moved to dampen talk of a shock tilt at WBC light-welterweight champion Devon Alexander in Las Vegas on 6 March.

IBF champion Juan Urango is pencilled in for a unification clash against Alexander at Treasure Island Casino. Should that fall through, ex-WBA champion Rees is a possible stand-in. Preliminary talks have been held between Don King, the promoter of the Vegas show, and Calzaghe Promotions, who manage Newbridge's Rees, 29. Saint Louis' Alexander, 22, would be a formidable opponent, the southpaw known as Alexander the Great having won all 19 of his fights, 12 by stoppage. Have your say on Rees' title hopes He claimed the vacant WBC title with a win over Sheffield's Junior Witter last August. Rees is in buoyant mood after his victory in last month's Prizefighter light-welterweight show at the Olympia National Hall in London.

He had planned to step back down to lightweight, targeting a domestic title before moving back to world level. Rees held the WBA light-welterweight title from 2007-8, losing it to Andriy Kotelnik who went on to lose the belt to Amir Khan. The Kotelnik defeat was the only reversal for Rees in 32 professional fights, but weight problems have dogged his career and many feel that the 5ft 7ins Welshman would be more effective in a lower weight division. Rees is trained by Enzo Calzaghe and has years of training experience with Joe Calzaghe under his belt.
