Eddie Hearn eyeing global stardom for Anthony Joshua

Eddie Hearn has outlined plans to turn Anthony Joshua into a global star and revealed that he has already held talks for Britain's heavyweight champion to fight in China.

Joshua added the WBA heavyweight title to his IBF belt with a thrilling knockout victory over Wladimir Klitschko in 11 rounds at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.

It was only Joshua's 19th professional fight, but a post-war record British boxing crowd of 90,000 turned up to see the 2012 Olympic champion recover from the first knockdown of his career in the fifth round to win.

"Every international broadcaster that was in town left that venue with their jaw wide open," Joshua's promoter Hearn told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek programme.

"I'm about British boxing and British sport, and if I can keep these events here we'll do it.

"But when you talk about legacy there are markets and boundaries that he (Joshua) wants to break.

"America, Africa and we're already in talks with China at the moment about doing a fight at the Bird's Nest Stadium. The Middle East as well.

"If we're going to go on for eight or 10 years these are the places we need to go for him to become a global star.

"But I don't want to take the opportunity away from British boxing to be the epicentre of world boxing, which I think we now are.

"Anthony knows the support here is incredible, so why not make this the Mecca of boxing?"

Hearn also said the TV audience on Sky Sports Box Office set a new British pay-per-view record.

"It's too early to tell you the number," said Hearn, who added that Joshua would not be in the ring again until October at the earliest.

"But the record was 1.15 million from Manny Pacquiao against Floyd Mayweather - and last night beat that for sure."

WBC champion Deontay Wilder was ringside on Saturday night and the American said he would relish a unification fight with Joshua.

But unbeaten Wilder says he has New Zealand's WBO champion Joseph Parker in his sights first.

"I want to get that WBO belt in 2017," Wilder said.

"Once I obtain that belt and get rid of a manadatory then at the end of the year, or maybe the top of next year, I see a big unification fight. A mega-fight between me and Anthony Joshua.

"This division is so hot now and it would take it to the next step if we have only one champion.

"The baddest man on the planet - with all the titles and one face."
