Jones hopes to emulate Calzaghe

Leeds boxer Damon Jones is hoping to follow in the footsteps of his idol Joe Calzaghe and become a world champion. The 18-year-old won the 67kg final at the ABA finals in Colchester on Friday, the same title won by Calzaghe in 1991. He told BBC Radio Leeds: "It's the biggest achievement of my life so far but hopefully there's more to come. Jones, who has won 45 of his 49 fights, added: "I want to become a world champion like Joe Calzaghe, because he's a guy I look up to." The youngster, who boxes out of the West Leeds ABC, underlined his potential with a 31:13 victory over the favourite and three-time finalist Steve Turner of the Army. He is unlikely to be selected in the GB squad for the London 2012 Olympics, but admitted that the victory had made people take notice of him. "The ABA said I shouldn't enter at this age but I wanted to prove that I could win it. "Selection for the Olympics is closed, they've picked the squad but it has opened a lot of doors for me. "A lot of professional promoters have been on the phone and the England ABA want me to take part in the Youth European tournament and the Youth Commonwealth Games. "I'm probably going to have another season as an amateur and then maybe turn pro next year."
