Muhammad Ali - remembering his bouts with British boxers

Muhammad Ali's distinguished career included bouts against four different British boxers.

Between 1963 and 1976, Ali fought three times in London and also squared up against Britons in the United States, Germany and Malaysia.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at the men who fought 'The Greatest'.

SIR HENRY COOPER

Cooper fought Ali twice, at Wembley in 1963 and Highbury three years later. In their first meeting, the Londoner floored his opponent right at the end of the fourth round but Ali recovered in time for the fifth, during which he stopped the home fighter.

Their rematch on May 21, 1966 - which was for the world heavyweight title - also went Ali's way, with the fight stopped in the sixth round due to a deep gash over Cooper's left eye.

Cooper went on to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year in both 1967 and 1970 before being knighted in 2000. He died in 2011, aged 76.

BRIAN LONDON

Less than three months after his rematch victory against Cooper, Ali fought London at Earl's Court. Heavy favourite Ali defended his world title with a third-round stoppage of the Hartlepool-born fighter.

London, real name Brian Harper, who switched to London as his father had done during his boxing career, won 37 of his 58 career fights.

Following retirement he ran a nightclub in Blackpool, the town in which he still lives. He revealed in 2014 that - despite passing 80 years old - he still trains every day.

JOE BUGNER

The Hungary-born fighter had both British and Australian citizenship and took Ali the distance twice. First, in Las Vegas in 1973, Ali won via unanimous decision after 12 rounds then two years later - with the WBC and WBA heavyweight titles on the line - Ali won by the same method after 15 rounds in Kuala Lumpur.

Bugner, who remained friends with Ali following their bouts, won British, Commonwealth, European and Australian titles during his career and, after numerous retirements and comebacks, won the minor WBF title at the age of 48 by beating James Smith in 1998.

Bugner has lived in Queensland, Australia with his wife Marlene since 1986, and was a contestant on ITV's 'I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here' in 2009.

RICHARD DUNN

Yorkshireman Dunn travelled to Hamburg to face Ali for his WBC and WBA titles in May 1976. Ali floored Dunn five times before the bout was stopped in the fifth round.

Despite his defeat, Dunn returned to Bradford to a hero's welcome and a procession through the streets in a convertible Rolls-Royce, a "lovely car", as he told the Daily Mail in 2009.

He fought just twice more before retirement, and has since moved to Scarborough. A sports centre in Odsal was named after the boxer.
