Olympic champion Nicola Adams lands first world title

Nicola Adams has been crowned world champion for the first time after a split decision win over Thailand's Peamwilai Laopeam in Kazakhstan.

Victory for the 33-year-old secures the one major title that had eluded her after picking up three consecutive silver medals in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Adams' win in the flyweight division was clearer than the verdict suggests, with a dominant second round setting the tone for the contest she was largely able to dictate.

A big right hand followed by a body shot seemed to temporarily rock Laopeam in the second, but she did recover to cause Adams some problems of her own in the third.

Adams has now won European, EU, European Games and Commonwealth Games gold medals, as well as heading to Rio this summer as reigning world and Olympic champion.
