Dereck Chisora and Dillian Whyte bout to go ahead despite fracas

Dereck Chisora has been fined £25,000 and given a suspended two-year ban following his part in a press conference brawl with Dillian Whyte Manchester on Wednesday.

The British Boxing Board of Control also deemed that Whyte's British heavyweight title will no longer be on the line when the pair clash on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's world title defence.

Chisora hurled a press conference table in the direction of his opponent, sparking an ugly melee in which the pair had to be separated by security.

It is understood the Board gave serious consideration to scrapping the contest at an emergency hearing on Thursday, at which Chisora admitted to misconduct and bringing the sport into disrepute.

In a statement the Board said: " The Board considered the matter with great care and concern. Mr. Chisora's previous record, which is not good, was considered, as was a letter written to him, his opponent Dillian Whyte, his manager and the promoters by the General Secretary of the Board, dated the 16th November 2016, warning them that they should not misbehave and bring the sport of boxing into disrepute prior to the contest.

"Having viewed and listened to a recording of what occurred the Board concluded that Mr. Chisora's behaviour fell far short of that expected from a licensed boxer. Indeed his behaviour was wholly unacceptable and deserving of condign punishment."

In addition to the suspended ban and fine, Chisora has also been ordered to pay £5,000 towards the cost of the hearing.
