Gavin seals points victory
Frankie Gavin extended his perfect professional record to six victories with a six-round points win over Irishman Peter McDonagh in London.
Birmingham southpaw Gavin, 24, had stopped all five of his previous opponents and was looking to extend that run at Wembley Arena.
However, in an entertaining contest he was forced to go the distance against 32-year-old Galway fighter McDonagh, who had enlisted the help of celebrity psychic Uri Geller during preparations.
McDonagh was game and rushed forward from the opening bell - thereby allowing Gavin to pick him off.
He caught Gavin with a nice left hook mid-way through the opening round but was soon stung by a stiff southpaw left.
Though largely in control, Gavin was vulnerable to McDonagh's speculative lead left and was caught several times in the second round.
He dealt with them easily but at the same time seemed to be making little impact himself.
In the third round Gavin's shots had more substance and a nice early uppercut landed well. Moments later a tightly-thrown left was clearly the pick of Gavin's work to that point.
Gavin's pedigree became increasingly evident as the fight wore on and a cheeky counter right in the fifth set up an eye-catching attack before the pair exchanged words at the end of the round.
Gavin was looking to keep up his perfect stoppage record and stepped things up in the sixth. However, an early finish was never on the cards as tough McDonagh held on until the final bell, when referee Jeff Hinds awarded Gavin the bout with a score of 60-54.
