Gavin won't bend to McDonagh tactics
Frankie Gavin has warned Peter McDonagh even celebrity spoon-bender Uri Geller will not be able to help him on Saturday night.
London-based Irishman McDonagh will be the latest to stand in Gavin's way at Wembley Arena on Saturday and the 32-year-old has enlisted the services of well-known paranormalist Geller to help his preparations.
Birmingham southpaw Gavin, however, laughed it off. "I think it's a joke," he told Press Association Sport. "He's going to need a lot more than a spoon-bender to have a chance!"
Hot prospect Gavin, 24, is aiming for his sixth stoppage win from as many fights since turning professional a year ago. As he closes out his first year as a professional, former world amateur lightweight champion Gavin is happy with his progress.
"Training has been good, as has sparring," he said. "I've been sparring Matthew Hall (former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion), who really puts the pressure on and that's what McDonagh could do.
"I've been concentrating on speed in training, using my brain more. I feel like I'm getting stronger and bigger than I did last year, in all areas."
Reflecting on his first 12 months as a professional, Gavin said: "As long as I win and box well I'm happy, so it's been brilliant.
"I'm aiming for the British title before the end of the year."
Gavin will be making his first appearance as a professional in London, with fellow former amateur star James DeGale also in action.
"It's going to be big, I fought there as an amateur and this will be my first time as a professional," he said. "I think it's going to be a good show, they've sold a lot of tickets."
