Burns wins WBO super-featherweight title
Ricky Burns recovered from a first-round knockdown to claim the WBO super-featherweight belt from the previously unbeaten Roman Martinez in an explosive world title fight in Glasgow.
The Scot looked to have lost the first three rounds against the Puerto Rican but he recovered emphatically to secure a unanimous points verdict.
The Kelvin Hall has seen some famous fights over the years but this contest will go down as one of the most memorable as Burns deservedly beat the hard-hitting champion at his own game with a string of powerful shots throughout a gripping 12 rounds.
The Coatbridge boxer had suffered two title defeats earlier in his career but there was little doubt about the winner at the end of an all-action contest.
Burns was awarded victory by three rounds from two of the judges and two rounds by the third to stun the confident Martinez.
Burns said: "The better the opponent, the better I box. I just made a statement to everyone that doubted me.
"I proved I belong at world level. The heart and the grit that I showed out there, I surprised myself."
